Join commercial and fine art photographer Joseph Schuyler in a unique weekend hands-on workshop will explore the strengths and weaknesses of making images with a cell phone. Beginning on Troy Night Out and continuing into the following Saturday, students will develop shooting techniques and post processing of images unique to smartphones. Students must have access to an iPhone or smart phone with a camera to take this class.

This course will define and clarify the functions that are found on most SLR cameras, as well as some basic photography tips. Students will learn about depth of field, aperture, exposure, light meter, quality settings, shutter speeds, and basic composition.

Interested in making a documentary? Want to know the steps involved in creating a documentary project? In this course, participants will work together to create one or two short documentary projects over the span of five lesson weeks. We will work through every step of the process as a group - from selecting a topic or topics to creating a faux (or real) budget to producing the project and directing the project. No prior experience is necessary. This class is designed to teach participants about the steps required of making a documentary project through hands-on experience.

How can you teach using films and still find time for everything you want or need to cover in your course? How can you use films on classroom tests to increase student learning? This one-day workshop is designed for middle and high school teachers in the arts, English language arts, and social studies. Using clips from a variety of films, participants will learn valuable teaching and testing strategies to increase their students(and their own!) media literacy and appreciation while addressing New York State Learning Standards. Participants will create instructional materials to practice using films in lesson plans and on tests. Curriculum guidance materials and test samples will be provided.

This workshop will offer instruction for artists in the best way to
digitally photograph artwork for portfolios, show submissions and
advertising. The class will use The Arts Center's newly built
photography booth. Participants will photograph one piece, and the
images will be burned to a CD for their use. Discussions and
demonstrations will include: camera equipment overview, best practices
for both film and digital photography, optimal lighting techniques,
color accuracy maintenance, sharp focus, and composition.
