Master Class with Mark Shapiro

The Arts Center welcomes master potter Mark Shapiro in this four hour workshop where students will have an opportunity to view a demonstration and participate hands-on. Mark will demonstrate his approach to making functional pottery, focusing on cups and handles as a way of exploring a simple and essential form that can offer detail, excitement, and visual complexity. This workshop is highly recommended to current pottery and sculpture students or any interested artist, as this is an opportunity to experience an educational and inspiring workshop with an internationally recognized regional artist. Early registration is highly recommended for this class.

In this all-levels course, students will learn how to "throw" on the potter's wheel and continue to develop wheel throwing skills, refine techniques, and explore the creative aspects of the medium.  Students will learn how to throw vases, bowls, pots and more!  Carving and slip trailing for surface decoration will embellish creations, which will be glazed and kiln-fired. This is a fun, hands-on course for any enthusiastic beginner or continuing student.

Lectures, wheel throwing and hand-building will be used to explore the aesthetic, sculptural, and functional possibilities of clay. Techniques will be demonstrated and lectures will feature technical information on high-temperature firing and stoneware glazes.

New Techniques in Handbuilding

Learn how to build functional forms, such as a teapot, bird house, vase, or bowl using textured slabs of clay. You will create your own stamps to texture the clay, templates to design the shape of your pots and then build forms using soft and hardened slabs. You will learn to use the slab roller and extruder.  Your pots will be glazed and ready for everyday use.  This will be a creative experience for beginners and more advanced students.


Ceramic Sculpture

This course is designed to explore the nature of sculpting and to help students learn the skills needed to create clay sculpture. Topics include the skills of coil building, slab building, pinch construction and the use of extruded forms. Students are expected to spend at least three hours a week working on their sculptures outside of class time.

Clay for the Terrified

A great introductory class for those who want to try pottery, but aren't really "feelin' the wheel!" This class will explore ceramic surface decoration on tiles and on hand built vessels using homemade stamps. With the use of templates, students will construct and glaze unique clay pieces. Try your hand slab building and make a a bird house or box. There will be several hand building and glazing demonstrations, as well as ample time to work on your own. No prior clay knowledge required, just courage to try a something new and get a little messy!
