An introductory course covering the fundamental concepts and techniques of both design and creation of original jewelry. Includes the techniques of piercing and filing, soldering and polishing. Students will work with metal alone and in combination with other materials. Development of individual designs will be encouraged. This course involves the use of hand tools requiring fine motor coordination.

Students will refine basic skills and explore advanced techniques. Stone setting, forming, and fabricating skills will expand the student's knowledge and allow for more advanced designs. Control of the material to achieve desired results will be emphasized. This course involves the use of hand tools requiring fine motor coordination.


Jewelry III: Stone Setting

This is a two credit course. Special registration polices apply; please call 273-0552. Techniques of setting cabochon and faceted stones in both hand made and commercial settings will be taught in this course. Construction of bezel and basket settings for round and fancy shaped stones will be covered as well as tube and channel settings. Stone and gem identification and individual characteristics of stones will be included. This course involves the use of hand tools requiring fine motor coordination.


Pearl Stringing

In one evening, students will learn the traditional method of stringing pearls on knotted silk cord. Various techniques for finishing ends and attaching clasps will also be covered. Materials fee includes knotting tweezers and one strand of glass pearls for students to keep. No previous jewelry experience required, students may bring their own beads or pearls for possible use in this workshop.

Glass bead making is an ancient Venetian art form that has experienced a great resurgence in the past several years. There are countless varieties of style, color and shape that combine to make beautiful and unique glass beads. In this workshop, you will be introduced to the equipment, tools, materials and techniques used to safely melt and form glass into an array of bead shapes and styles. You will leave the class with your own beautiful beads in hand and perhaps a dose of glass bead fever!

Endless design possibilities begin with a simple dot or line. Students will learn how to lay dots and lines on the surface of a bead as the basis of bead design and style. Learn how to melt and move the dots and lines into various patterns and designs. Creating and using multicolor rods of glass called "twisties" will also be covered.

Whether they are encased within the glass or elegantly placed on the surface of a bead, flowers are a beautiful addition to bead design. In this class, students will learn how to create beautiful gardens under a layer of glass encasement. Creating and using petal and vine cane to create beautiful surface flowers will also be covered.

An encasement layer of clear glass adds depth and interest to the bead design. In this class, students will learn various methods of adding an encasing layer of glass to beads. Altering the look and design of the base bead through heat control and glass movement as well as how to add glass without altering the base design will be explored.

Wire wrapping of stones has been around for centuries.  This introductory course in wire wrapping will use Sterling Silver wire to frame a cabochon and make a wearable pendant.  Basic wire wrapping techniques will be covered and at least one pendant will be finished and ready to wear by the end of class.


Textured Metal Workshop: The Rolling Mill!

Hammer, etch and roll! Using the rolling mill students will use lace, wire screen, cut paper and many other everyday materials to add depth and texture to jewelry designs. Students may bring their own textured materials to experiment with or use those supplied by the instructor. This is also a great class for students are currently enrolled in a Jewelry Class at The Arts Center, as they can take their textured metal pieces and use them for in progress-projects. Jewelry I is a pre-requisite for this class. Current Jewelry I students may take this class.


Ring in a Day!

Complete a finished ring in one day! In this 4-hour workshop, students will construct a unique pearl ring using sterling silver sheet and wire. Skills used include sawing, piercing, filing, soldering, sanding and polishing.


Stone Setting Workshop

This workshop will introduce the experienced jewelry student to the tools and techniques utilized by professional bench jewelers in basic stone setting practices. Students will learn two different approaches to setting faceted round gemstones in 6- prong ring settings. We will also discuss the terminology of faceted stones, common obstacles and risks in setting colored gems and simple tool modifications that will make the stone setting process safer and easier for the jeweler. Cast bronze ring settings and cubic zirconia will be supplied by the instructor for students to learn prong cutting techniques. The object of this workshop is not to complete a finished piece of jewelry, but for students to learn the techniques needed to introduce faceted stones into their own jewelry designs in a measured and professional manner. Prerequisites: Jewelry I and II.


Precious Metal Clay Exploration

Explore the many ways that you can use fine silver Precious Metal Clay to create jewelry designs of your own.  Precious Metal Clay can be shaped like clay to produce uniquely textured surfaces, and once it is fired in the kiln, it results in shiny, durable, and beautiful silver jewelry. Students will have the opportunity to make pendants, earrings, beads, charms and rings.  The class will also cover techniques for setting and firing stones. Each student will leave with at least three fully finished pieces of jewelry.  Students at all levels of experience are welcome to join in the fun.  Students will pay a studio fee of $55.00 directly to the instructor at the start of class.
